altAcademy of Excellence students received high scores on a recent test.
Students in kindergarten through 12th grade scored above average on the
Stanford Achievement Test, which measures students' knowledge of
language, writing, math, science and more.
"This year, 100 percent of students scored their proficiency or a couple
grade levels above," said Headmaster Michael Perry.
The test allows students to see where they stand nationally compared to
others at their grade level.
"When they get to college, these are the kids they'll be competing
with," he said.
Perry said it's about ensuring students are "mentally prepared and ready
to compete at all levels."
Freshman Anthony Irby Jr., 15, said it feels good to know the whole
school passed.
"It's important to know where other ninth graders are and to know how we
match up," he said.
Michael Perry Jr., 14, said the school is preparing students for what's
to come.
"We're doing above-level work that's going to prepare us for college,"
he said.
Senior Ryan Long, 17, said he has come a long way since his days at West
Iredell High, when he was failing courses and sleeping in class.
He may be attending a small private school now, but it has transformed
his thinking and academic ability.
"It shows that you don't have to be in a public school setting to
excel," he said. "A private school setting works just as well."
